Personality

Ivaylo is a pragmatic young man who can come across as cold and apathetic while in truth he is rather moody and sensitive. He enjoys calm and silence, preferring to be alone rather than to engage in converstion. He can, however, become rather loquacious when talking about History which makes emerge his nerdy attitude. He is cynical towards the Church, for he knows how easy it would be for an institution of that influence and power to shape people’s minds to their liking.
He believes as an Historian he must mantain objectivity towards the world.

Before Garreg March

Ivaylo is the only heir of the Von Hooft family, their name being one of the small nobility dwelling in Enbarr. For generations, the Hoofts have written and guarded the Empire’s history, their role being preserving the memory of Fòdlan’s ancient times, taking care of the Imperial library and overseeing the competition for the post of Imperial Historian. Despite being powerful mages, the Hoofts never bore Crests, nor manifested interest in it being their main role the one of Historiographers. For that purpose the Hoofts also distanciated themselves from the Church, claiming distance from such an influent institution was necessary to their objectivity, however, they were undeniably subject to the Adrestian court.
In order to continue his family’s legacy, Ivaylo has received a strict education since he was a child.
He hardly had time to play with other children and he grew up in solitude, focusing on his studies and trying to live up to his strict father’s expectations.
His only companions in that grey life where Rayna, his pet wolf that is mother brought him from one of her trips to the Ogma Mountains, and lady Von Hooft herself. However, the woman fell ill and was confined in her quarters ever since, leaving Ivaylo by himself. This had a great impact on Ivaylo’s father as well, who grew colder and more controlling. As the relationship with his father crumbled the aspiring historian was almost always confined in his room and he started developing a sensation of conflict between his passion for the history and the awareness of the way the one at power strumentalize it for their own gain, not unlikely with his father condoning it.
A chance for a taste of liberty came when the young historian left the Adrestian Capital to attend the Academy at Garreg March. His father sustained it was fundamental for him to go, for he would have the occasion to meet and observe the heirs of the most powerful houses and the future political leaders of Fòdlan. Thus Ivaylo left, joining the Black Eagles house where he would be careful to mantain academic excellence not to risk losing his newfound freedom,

Coming to Garreg March Ivaylo is finally able to live far from his father's strict watch, while struggling with making friends and understanding social clues he continues his studies with passion. He soon becomes one of the sharpest students at Garreg March. He can be usually found in the lybrary, in the Black Eagles House and at the Training Grounds in rare occasions.

Timeskip

After the battle of Garreg Mach, Ivaylo was summoned by his father and prompted to return to Enbarr. From there he followed with concern the war developments though in the first two years he was unable to leave his family’s estate. The worsening of his mother conditions and her death further fostering the tension in the Hooft family and Ivaylo’s decision not to run for the role of Imperial Historian resulted in his father tightening his grip on his movements.
Ivaylo thus run away as soon as he obtained his certification as an historian, travelling to gather datas about the conflic and searching for a new path.

Crimson Flower

Unsure wether Edelgard’s path will be worth the bloodshed it will cause, Ivaylo joined firstly because he instinctively followed Byleth, however, he chooses to stay and join the Black Eagles Strike Force in order to uncover the truth the Church has been keeping from them. His family also sides with Edelgard, although Ivaylo has cut ties with them and abandoned his title due to his father opposing his plan to reform Fòdlan's Academic world and make their role a public post. During Byleth’s absence, he begins with the work, also keeping precises documentations on the war and looking for information on Those Who Slither in the Dark, trying to uncover the truth.
Ivaylo’s studies and the horrors he has witnesses made him turn into a more nihilistic person, although his newfound drive gives him strenght. The thought of facing his former companions pains him, yet he knows that is simply the nature of war in which human dilemma has little importance.

After the Professor going missing, Ivaylo sides against Edelgard, however, his family decides to support the Empire to secure their position, therefore he runs away from home giving up his title.
Aware of the risk his father's work as an Historian might forsake truth in favour of creating a narrative for the Empire's propaganda , he travels to record the impact war has on the common folk, wondering about the meaning of his profession and the path he has chosen.
Five years later he finds himself returning to Garreg March due to the promise made with the Professor.
The students reunite and he joins Byleth to defeat Edelgard, who has lost sight of her ideals and has begun using questionable methods.
After the war he starts reforming Fòdlan's education system and academic world, making it more accessible. He continues his studies as well and visits different lands studying cultures and popular myths. He will become famous for his travel journals and it's said once he abandoned his role he worked as a teacher in some orphanages.
